Canvas Course: is an online course (synchronous or asynchronous) that allows content to be accessed through the Canvas learning management system; provides a digital space where instructors can organize course materials, communicate with students, and manage assignments and grades (if applicable).

Conference: is a multi-session event focused on a specific subject, typically held over one or more days with 50+ participants. It features presentations, workshops, and networking opportunities aimed at professional development, often includes external attendees, and may involve sponsors and registration fees.

Contract Credit Course: is a for-credit graduate course offered by Virginia Tech through an agreement with a sponsoring organization, tailored for that organization’s employees. The course details—such as content, format, location, and timing —are jointly determined by the sponsor and the academic department.

Contract Program: is a customized program delivered by Virginia Tech under a formal agreement with an external organization, which pays a set fee (in full or in installments) instead of participant fees. The payment covers all program costs, and the sponsoring organization assumes responsibility for any deficits.

Registration/CEU Only: is a registration-only program and is a limited-service program that collects registration or sponsorship fees from participants. CEU-only programs are specifically for Virginia Tech faculty providing non-credit training or learning activities where Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be provided.

Short Course/Workshop: is a focused, non-credit, one to multi-day learning program designed to provide specific skills or knowledge-building on a particular topic; often involves a structured curriculum and may result in a certificate of completion and/or CEUs (Continuing Education Units).

Technical Assistance Program (TAP): is a university-sponsored consulting activity that connect faculty expertise with current business needs. Typically, a shorter-term engagement with a budget maximum of $50,000.
